It is like that because, either the installers didn't know how to run a stretcher and stretched one direction more then the other. Or they run around with a knee kicker, which isn't a stretcher, and cheated the previous homeowner out of a professional installation. Or the carpet has been cleaned by someone that didn't know what they were doing, and soaked the carpet, with foot traffic before the carpet dried out, compounding the problem.
