Forum Title: used carpet for my livingroom
I can't aford new carpet right now so a friend is going to give me there old carpet when they get new. The carpet is in real good shape except for the holes for the floor registers and a melted spot in front of his fireplace. I think I will have to piece it to make it work. Patch a coulpe of the places. Other than that it will fit with no seems. Can someone tell me what I should do to lay the carpet because I can't aford to pay for that either. Thank you for your asistance. Harlen

Geeez, that is a book in itself. Let me suggest this.... Buy the time you rent all the tools to properly do the job, and a lot of your trial & error, you could have saved some money. Have you priced tool rental and also what an installers minimum charge is?

talk to the installers that install your friends new carpet, maybe you can work out a deal.floorguy has a valid point, by the time you rent tools and try to install your carpet you could save by having it installed

If all else fails, just loose lay it in the room. It'll be better then bare floor, and you can save the money towards a floor worth a professional install. We did an addition years ago...Had some carpet loose laid over the pad for almost a year until I got it finished.
